Literacy acquisition induces massive changes in cognitive functions, brain organization and brain structure, especially within the language system. One of the most important changes is the establishment of strong and probably automatic connections between the auditory and visual systems. Through these connections, the cognitive processes that are engaged during speech processing become increasingly sensitive to orthographic knowledge, making the two language codes hardly dissociable. Based on a combination of data from different techniques (behavioral, EEG, fMRI, TMS), I will discuss about the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying the connections between the two language codes and how these recurrent connections progressively lead to more profound changes within both spoken language and visual systems themselves.
