The BCBL is a world-class interdisciplinary research center for the study of cognition, brain and language jointly founded by Innobasque, Ikerbasque, The University of the Basque Country and the Government of Gipuzkoa. It provides a platform for researchers and professionals from related areas to carry out frontline research, development and innovation in this area. The specific aim of the BCBL’s research activity is to unravel the neurocognitive mechanisms involved in the acquisition, comprehension and production of language, with special emphasis on bilingualism and multilingualism. Some of the studied areas include the processes involved in normal child language acquisition and second language learning in adults, as well as learning disorders, language disorders, language-related effects of aging and neurodegeneration and language use in different social contexts.
The BCBL’s main laboratory houses state-of-the-art equipment, including:
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; Siemens 3T MAGNETOM PRISMAfit)
- magnetoencephalography (MEG; 306-sensor Megin Triux Neo® scanner)
- electroencephalography (EEG; BrainAmp DC®amplifier)
- optical coherence tomography (OCT; Spectralis OCT device)
- eyetracking (EyeLink 2K)
- behavioural cabins
In addition, our main laboratory houses the BCBL Babylab, in which we use the following techniques:
- near Infrared spectroscopy (NIRX & Lumo NIRS)
- electroencephalography (EEG)
- eyetracking,
- behavioral studies
In small groups, you will be guided through our laboratories and receive detailed information on the scientific work done at the BCBL. The tour will last approximately 30 minutes. Please note that the BCBL is located about 5 km from the conference venue. A shuttle will be provided to take you to the BCBL, and you will return to the conference venue using public transport (buses to the city center depart every 5–10 minutes).
