The Educational Neuroscience and Developmental Disorders group at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (San-Sebastián-Donostia, Spain) (https://www.bcbl.eu/en/research/research-groups/educational-neuroscience-developmental-disorders)  aims to sponsor a candidate for an Inphinit Predoctoral Fellowship, a competitive call for predoctoral fellowships awarded by the La Caixa – see last year’s call here).

The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team composed of predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior researchers. Our group investigates typical and atypical reading and language development across diverse linguistic populations to uncover the neurocognitive bases of dysfunction and compensation in reading and language developmental disorders. The group has extensive experience in clinical and educational neurocognitive science research and employs a wide range of behavioural and neuroimaging techniques (e.g., EEG, MEG, MRI and genetic analyses), as well as diverse experimental designs (e.g., longitudinal, training-based, and single-case studies) involving young populations with or without developmental language disorders. The team is also strongly committed to the societal impact of science, actively engaging in the transfer of scientific knowledge to society by working closely with clinicians and educators and fostering dialogue between scientists and the broader community.

Project summary: 

The position is not linked to a specific project. The PhD student will have the opportunity to join an on-ongoing research line of the group and/or develop a research project within the broader scope of the group research. Potential projects include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Dysfunctional and Compensatory mechanisms in developmental disorders (Dyslexia, DLD, etc)
  • Impact of bilingualism on reading development and dyslexia
  • Design and Validation of diagnosis and intervention tools for reading difficulties
  • Genetic bases of reading and dyslexia

In any case, the PhD student is expected to develop original experiments under the supervision and guidance of the PIs.

Job description

The successful candidate will be involved in developing and running behavioral and/or neuroimaging experiments, analyzing data, and disseminating the results in scientific conferences (oral presentations/posters) and peer-reviewed journals.

PI and research group: 

The candidate will form part of Educational Neuroscience and Developmental Disorders research group under the direct supervision of Dr. Marie Lallier and Dr. Amaia Carrión-Castillo.

  1. CANDIDATE PROFILE AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Elegibility:

  • Young researchers of any nationality are eligible to apply for the Doctoral INPhINIT Incoming and Retaining Fellowships Programmes
  • Candidates must not have carried our more than four years of research activity before the closing date of the call (to be announced, but approximately second fortnight of January 2026 for the Incoming and second fortnight of February 2026 for the Retaining).
  • At the time of recruitment, candidates must have completed the studies that allow them to enroll in an official PhD programme in Spain/Portugal. The verification of the required level of studies will be carried out by the host university when the admission procedure begins.
  • Candidates cannot have started doctoral studies prior to the start of the fellowship.

INPhINIT Incoming Fellowships Programme:

  • Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Spain/Portugal for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately preceding the closing date of the call.

 INPhINIT Retaining Fellowships Programme:

  • Candidates must have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain/Portugal for more than twelve months in the 3 years immediately preceding the closing date of the call.

Required skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • A university degree (Bachelor’s) in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Linguistics, Speech Pathology, Education or neighboring areas
  • A minimum of 300 ECTS, 60 of which should correspond to Master’s degree level

Desirable skills:

  • Previous experimental experience in research in neurocognitive science or psycholinguistics.
  • Statistics skills (e.g., R, SPSS)
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab)

 

  1. WORKING CONDITIONS

Salary:

  • 25.000€ gross annual salary
  • Additional 3.500€ are provided to cover other research costs such as conferences, courses, research stays and tuition fees to the doctoral program.

Language policy

  • The corporative language at the center is English
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Basque will be an asset for this particular position, but it is not required
  • The center provides initial level Spanish and Basque lessons to all the international staff members
  • The interview will be conducted entirely in English
