Fluency in reading requires automating lexical processes. The reading Dual-Route Model claims that the use of visual route allows to achieve automaticity in reading words, contributing to reading fluency. From Attention Unit of Learning Disabilities (University of La Laguna), it has been designed and validated a training program in order to automate word recognition through the familiarization with visual route. This program consist of twenty sessions, forty-five minutes each one, with a frequency of twice a week. The program was applied to a group of children with specific learning disabilities in reading. In every session, the participants performed eleven tasks. These tasks promote familiarity with common spelling patterns and easy to connect the orthographic representations to the semantic system. The scores obtained before and after intervention were compared in words and pseudowords reading (accuracy and time). The findings show meaningful profits in words reading after this intervention, so we conclude that this program is effective to improve fluency in words reading.
