Information about the position: The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language – BCBL- and the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics – BCAM- are offering one 2-year funded Postdoctoral opportunity (renewable for 2 additional years based on performance).

The position is linked to the development of novel methods for MRI acquisition and reconstruction for quantitative anatomical and/or functional MRI, with an emphasis on the application of evolutionary algorithms. The researcher will be expected to have close interactions with the local neuroscience team to bridge the gap between methods (mathematics, physics), neuroimaging and neuroscience, since these methods will be applied to clinical topics of interests in cognitive neuroscience.

Job description: The successful candidate will work with several PIs from the BCBL (Drs. Caballero-Gaudes and Paz-Alonso) and from the BCAM (Prof. Carlos Artemio Coello). The candidate will develop novel methods for MRI acquisition and reconstruction (sequence optimization, sampling trajectories, pulse design, acceleration schemes) for accurate and efficient quantitative anatomical and/or functional MRI (e.g. fingerprinting, multiparameter mapping) in line with advanced mathematical algorithms in the area of multi-objective evolutionary optimization and computation (e.g. swarm optimization, genetic algorithms). Candidates should be enthusiastic and highly motivated to transfer these methods to clinical research in cognitive neuroscience, such as developmental dyslexia. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program that complements the aims of the position.

PIs and research group: Dr. Caballero-Gaudes (Signal Processing in Neuroimaging group, BCBL) – https://www.bcbl.eu/en/research/research-groups/signal-processing-neuroimaging; Dr. Paz-Alonso (Language and Memory Control group, BCBL), and Dr. Carlos Artemio Coello (Combinatorial Optimization group, BCAM). The BCBL houses state-of-the-art Siemens 3T Prisma human MRI systems, with a research collaboration agreement with Siemens and access to IDEA license. The project will have access to this system that is fully dedicated for research purposes.

 

  1. CANDIDATES’ PROFILE AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Required skills:

  • PhD in MR physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field (e.g. cognitive neuroscience) in which the candidate has obtained the required experience.
  • Knowledge and experience for MRI physics, signal/image processing and/or multi-objective evolutionary algorithms.
  • Solid mathematical background and programming skills (Matlab, Python, C++).
  • Strong written and spoken English.

Desirable skills:

  • Previous experience with acquisition and reconstruction methods for quantitative anatomical and/or functional MRI.
  • Familiarity with Siemens MR protocols and procedures would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Basque

Salary: Gross salary € 28.000 - € 36.000
