Perception is strongly shaped by adaptation to the properties of the world around us. I will review studies exploring the consequences of adapting different observers to the same environment or the same observer to different environments. These sensory adjustments strongly influence the neural representations of both simple (e.g. color appearance) and complex (e.g. face recognition) stimulus attributes, and may influence the extent to which we have shared vs. disparate perceptual experiences.
