Attention and Free Will: From Neural Systems to Synapses

Mangun, R.

Attention involves powerful neural mechanisms for the control of information processing in the brain, and is critical for perception, language processing, memory and emotion. This lecture will describe neural mechanisms of voluntary, goal-directed attention and the role of free will in attentional orienting. A model of the specificity of attentional control in influencing perceptual processes will be described. Attentional influences over perception will be described at the circuit, cellular and synaptic levels using a novel physiological method for revealing how attention affects the fidelity of visual information processing.
