Date: Nov 29, 2012

What: Coexistence of two languages in one mind: Does this mean mental war?

Where: BCBL auditorium

Who: Guillaume Thierry, Prifysgol Bangor University, UK

When: 10am

In this talk I will explain how electrical activity recorded from the human scalp sheds light onto the cognitive mechanisms underlying language processing in the bilingual mind. I will provide evidence for language non-selective lexical access in comprehension and production when bilinguals function exclusively in one of their languages. I will also show that language non-selective access extends to the domain of syntax. Pulling these examples together, I will show that event-related brain potentials reveal a fascinating reality about the mind of individuals who know two languages, namely, the fact that it is actually bilingual even though it manifests itself as monolingual.
